180x190 pixel V finder chart for HV 5756 of north-south radius 1 arcmin. North is up, west to the right. Scale is 0.63 arcsec/pixel. The crosshairs indicate the Cepheid binary system. Stars of magnitude V=19 are visible on this stretch.
1996 Jul 26 - Eclipse is probably close to being over at this point. Observations taken during this time may show additional contact times (or delays) due to the changing size of the photosphere of the Cepheid.
1996 Jul 18 - First reductions of CTIO 0.9m BVI data indicate that the star was still in deep eclipse as of 1996 Jul 17.6 UT. No indication yet of an increase in brightness from minimum. Observations were also obtained at SAAO on the next night by Patrick Woudt, but these have not yet been reduced.
HV 5756
The MACHO collaboration (cf. IAUC 6312, plus K. Pollard) has
discovered that the 17.5-day period type-II Cepheid variable HV
5756 in the Large Magellanic Cloud is an eclipsing binary whose
next primary minimum will occur on 1996 July 18.0 UT +/- 2 days.
The star is located at R.A. = 5h19m26s.8, Decl. = -69o51'52"
(equinox 2000.0), with magnitude V approximately 15.8, V-R
approximately +0.4, and a V semi-amplitude of 0.35 mag. During
eclipse, the star will be about 0.5 mag fainter at V. A finder
chart and further information about eclipse development may be
found at either http://wwwmacho.mcmaster.ca/HV5756/index.html or
http://wwwmacho.anu.edu.au/HV5756/index.html. Potential observers
are requested to contact (Doug Welch at telephone 905-525-9140, x23186)
to coordinate observations.
